A4 - THE PERKINS JOURNAL, Thursday, February 12, 2015 Opinions Card of Thanks I want to send a huge "Thank you" to relatives and friends for prayers, cards, calls and visits during my recent 40+ days in the hospital. The Good LOrd has allowed me to hang around for a while longer! My family has really gone above and beyond for me nd I can't sing their praises enough! It's been a rough ride, but with continued prayers and help, we'll make it! Visitors are welcome, I've missed everyone. Love to all. Pat Bickell Perkins Thank You On Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, I had the honor of being inducted into the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. I want to say thank you to the administration and school board of Perklns-Tryon Schools for giving me the opportunity and for their support for all those years. . To all players on the teams whom I had the honor to ach, I want to make sure that all of you know this honor just as much about you as it is about me. Without all of ,gur time, hard work, dedication and success, this honor tver would have happened. ":1 have so many good memories and good stories of the time I spent as the baseball coach here and they will be with me forever. I just want to say Thank You. The blood flow, exchang- ing oxygen and carbon dioxide, between calf and mother is greatly impaired, if not completely clamped Off. Research, many years ago, conducted in Europe illustrates how little time LIVESTOCK it takes to compromise the calf's survivability when the umbilical cord is clamped. These scien- tists studied the impact of clamping the umbilical cord for 0, 4, 6, or 8 min- utes. Certainly, if a producer does not feel confident in their abilities to deliver the backward calf, call your veterinarian immediately. Time is of the essence. As producers examine heifers or cows at calving and find a situation where the calf is coming backward, they need to keep this European data in mind. If the calf's hips are not yet through the pelvic opening, they have a little time to locate help and have someone else to aid in the assistance process. The remainder of the delivery should go with less resistance as the hips are usually the tough- est part to get through the pelvic opening. The shoulders may provide some resistance. How- ever, some calf rotation and traction being applied as the cow strains will usually produce significant progress. Remember, the completion of the delivery is to be accomplished in about 4 minutes or less. The calf's head and nos- trils are in the uterine fluids and cannot breathe until completely delivered. The calf must get oxygen rap- idly to offset the hypoxia that it is been subjected to during the delivery After the calf is delivered, clean the mouth and nostrils of fluids and tickle it's nos- trils with a straw to cause snorting and inhalation of air to get it started to breathing. 2015 No-till Oklahoma Conference March 3rd & 4th, 2015 The National Center for Employee Development Norman, Oklahoma Cost to attend the con- ference will be $125 (after February 20th $140) Forms are availabIe at Payne Co.
