PISTOL PETE TO BE
FEATURE OF OSU
HOMECOMING THEME
This year's OSU Home-
coming theme will be "Pistol
Pete in the Time Machine" it
has been announced by
Maria Cavanaugh of Perkins,
who has been named
sub-chairman of the fund
raising committee for Okla-
homa State's Annual Home-
coming observance.
Miss Cavanaugh will be a
junior this fall.
The dates for this year's
event will be Friday and
Saturday, October 14-15, but
events begin as early as
Tuesday of that week.
The Saturday morning
parade and afternoon foot-
ball game with Kansas State
mark high points of the
week.
Frank "Pistol Pete" Eat-
on, a pioneer Perkins
resident, who died t the age
of 97, was the living model
for the Pistol Pete emblem
which was designated the
symbol for Oklahoma A & M
College (OSU) in 1923.
The story goes that Eaton
was on horseback heading an
Armistice parade in Stillwa-
tar. Leslie B. Swim of
Stillwater relates that "A
group of students saw Pistol
Pete and the quest for an
emblem for A & M ended. I
recall that permission was
asked to use his picture and
he consented. From the-
picture, a likeness was
drawn and placed on college
stickers, sweatshirts, ban-
ners: book covers, and finally
on sweaters and pencils.
The living emblem was a
cowboy, i 1 oxight The, .u .
cartoon was made and it
clicked."
Previously, the college
emblem was the tiger, which
supposedly was copied from
Princeton. There was dissat-
isfaction among Aggies
because the tiger did not
truly represent Oklahoma.
The Perkins Journal has
an. eight page tabloid size
brochure relating many
t;nusual facts and writings,
IL'US handsome photographs,
of the late and famous Frank
"Pistol Pete" Eaton. It is
entitled "The Straight Shoot-
er". The cost is 50c per copy.
