A4 - THE PERKINS JOURNAL, Thursday, July 22, 2010 Opi @ Dear friends, Thank you for your kind expression of sympathy upon the death of our son, Pete Windiate. Your warm words provided a tremendous amount of strength and support to us during this difficult time. I know that Pete valued your friendship. He would be grateful for all the kind and nice things you had to say about him. Thanks again, LaVerne and Anthony Black Attention AT&T cellular customers When driving from Still- water to Perkins, I gener- ally lose cell coverage each day at three different locations on Hwy 177. The primary election on July 27 is fast approaching, and I want to encourage all Okiahomans, of all political-: stripes, to learn about the candidates vying for office and cast their votes. My Uncle Lloyd had a saying--"Public service is the " rent you pay for the space you occupy." That thinking runs deep in my family, with a history of family members who taught public school or sought public office. But you don't have to run for office to be a public servant. The most basic and necessary form of public service, voting, takes only a few minutes. Voting is our most precious right and, as citizens of a democracy, it's our most important responsibility. The freedoms Americans enjoy are not just about privi- lege. Our freedoms also require that we take responsibility for our government and its actions. We do this by actively choosing our leaders and deciding important public policy questions. There are many things Oklahomans can do beyond voting. Candidates rely on volunteer supports to knock - doors, put out signs and spread their message, working for a candidate you support gets you more involved in the process of selecting our representatives in the State Capi- tol, on the local school board, or in Washington, D.C. Voting is a precious right and a serious responsibility, one for which other Americans have fought and died. The ' issues decided by public office holders affect everyone, and it is a blessing to llve in a country where all citizens can have their say. Through our history, we have moved from the idea of democracy to the reality of democracy. Requirements of land ownership and literacy, restrictions on sex and race, ' have been thrown aside, giving a voice to every American. I encourage every Oklahoman to use their voice on July'" 27. It means exercising your rights and accepting your responsibility.
