A lot of people visit S~luoyah,,
State Parkl~tween Wagoner and
Tahlequah each day, bent on
catching a mess of fish in
sprawling Fort Gibson lake.
But on Tuesday, August 14,
about 2,000 or more Oklahoma
Farmers Union members and
guests will converge on the
park, expecting to get a messol
fish already cooked and ready
to eat.
They wonPt be disappointed,
because August 14 is the date
set for the 19th annual North-
east OFU fish fry---the biggest
cookout held annually in Okla-
homa.
BIll Purkey, Claremore,
of the wild flavor that so many
folks likes McNamarats fish
will be intermingled with blue,
channel and flathead catfish
caught by Joe Riggan.
For years, Joe, who now
divides his time between his
cabin at Enterprise, Okla., and
his home in Oklahoma City, was
chief adjuster for the Farmers
Union property insurance de-
partment.
His chief concern these days
is running his Lake Eufaula
trout lines and selling a bit of
Farmers Union insurance on the
side.
Purkey said: "Along with cat-
fish, northeast area workers
northeast area secretary, said will serve beans, onions, bread
most of the 1,500 pounds offsh and hot coffee cooked in a big
to be served that day will be black kettle over an open fire."

cattleman) Dan McNamara of by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Corn-

However, just to add a dash truck for music and announce-
ments will be in the area.
Joe Campbell, Pryor, north-
east president, said all Farm-
ers Union members, whether
they live in the northeastern
part of the state, or not, are
welcome to attend.
Once in the park, signs will
point the way. Serving will be-
gin about 6:30 or 7 p.m.
