Grow Up!
• Q •
Text: "At a time when you shou-
ld be teaching others, you need
teachers yourselves to repeat to
you the ABC of God's revelat-
ion to men! For anyone who
continues to live on "milk" is
obviously immature -- he sim-
ply has not grown up." (Heb-
recs 5:42-13, J.B. Phillips tran-
sla tion )
At a recent school-class re-
union someone figured that the
eight of the class was 3 V2 tins
greater than when they grad-
uated! We might ask what else
did they accumulate, beside
fatty tissue? Are we also grow-
ing intellectually, spiritually,
emotionally? Are the processes
of maturation alive in us? For
you see, ell adults are not "a-
dult." The1:e are persons who
are grown up on the outside
but who are ehildreri on the
inside. They may be 6' tall, but
mere babies emotionally and
lrittmlly. So we come to rea-
lize that immaturity is as much
a sin as some forms of immor-
ality. For "sin" is basically fl
failure to fulfill the God-ord-
ained purpose for life. One out-
tanding missionary, Dr. E.
Stanley Jones, says that the
pr651em of both East and West
is the great for maturity. "We
are very immature people at-
?4roping to handle very mature
mblems. Our problems are
mltrtmrdg :our capacity to hand-
le them."
For instance, marriage coun-
selors agree that lack of adult
maturity is the case of most
marital difficulties. Marriage is
or adults-- not for spoiled child-

Pen seeking selfish desires. Or
again, here is a father who goes
into a temper tantrum to have
his way; or a sulking mother.
others dominate and become a-
gressive to cover up feelings o
inferiority. Still others hang on
to leftover prejudices, childish
fears, and jealousies. Worst of
all, there are those caught on a
low level of living, who have
ceased to grow up, living in a
daily grind instead of daily
growth.
This matter of immaturity is
he concern of the Epistle to the
Hebrews, and in paraphase he
says, Won't you ever grow up-"
We all like to think we have
grown up; its always the other
person who is immature. Rath-
er, let us confess that none of
us have "arrived" - none of us
have reached that fullness of
mature manhood that is found
in Jesus Christ. Christain ma-
turity is not a goal that we ever
reach: we're always in a pro-
cess of becoming which Js a
continuing experience in the
life of any serious Christain.
The Hebrew writer is face
to face with he problem of the
Christain who refuses to grow
up: The Christain who refuses
to row up in fith and know-
ledge is quickly out-of-date,
answering old questions, and
avoiding new ones, such as pea-
ce and war, race prejudice, the
new sex morality, etc. There are
people who have never grown
up in behavior. Too many a-
dults are like children who sulk,
throw temper-fits, and refuse
to 'play' if things danX .go his
own way! A case of 'arrested
.development' is ahvays a path-
etic thing; and the world, and
our churches, are full of people
whose religious development has
been arrested. They refuse to

grow up. Yes, they even refuse
to attend church school classes,
because they recognize no need
for further growth, and stopped
learning, growing and maturing
years ago.
It is true that Jesus said that
the greatest thing in the world
is the child-like spirit; but there
is a world of lifference between
the child-like and the children
spirit. Peter Pan, the boy would
not grow up, makes a chaining
play on the stage; but Peter Pan,
the man and woman and teen-
ager who will not grow up,
makes for a tragedy in real life.
Therefore, is our faith the re-
ligion of childhood, or the faith
of maturity? Let us be careful
thai we are not still behaving
like children when we should
be behaving like Christian men
and women full grown! May our
standard of Christain maturity
be nothing less than the mea-
sure of the stature of the full-
ness of Christ."
