SHERIFF DENIES
RUMORS
DAVENPORT -- Lin-
coln County Sheriff Ray
McLain says that he
relinquished the job of
heading the September
26 fire investigation of
the arson burning of the
Lincoln County News
because of the rumors
circulating through the
community that he
might have been involv-
ed in setting the fire.
McLain stated that he
has been told by the
federal Alcohol, Tobacco
and Firearms Depart-
ment investigators that
he is not a suspect. He
said he felt that if he in-
vestigated the fire and
did not solve it, those
spreading the rumors
might think he was
covering something up.
He said those starting
the rumors "are so low
they could stand up and
walk under a snake."
