Phyllis Stevens introduced Glad-
ene Allred who presented the
program on gerontology entitled
"Myths of Aging and Stereo
Types." She enlightened the mem-
bers about myths such as old age be-
ing a disease, old age is mindless,
old people are not physically fit, old
age is sexless, old age is useless and
old people are powerless.
She stressed aging is nornml part
of living and can be a new stage
of human growth. Also, intellectual
growth can continue well into
ones 80's. Research indicates the
brain continues to contain the same
number of neurons. They are just
smaller. It is important to "use
it" or "loose it" which tells us
how important it is to continue
stimulating growth.
Our speaker reminded us what
passes for aging is disuse. Those
who exercise regularly experience
better physical and mental health
opposed to those who become
sedentary.
Old age is not sexless!
Older people can be powerful.
Wonderful dessert was served to
Carol Acuff, Inez Barnes, Fern
Downey, Billee Fisher, Florence
Holbrook, Joan McDaniel, Barbara
Kirby, Claudean Reynolds and
Erma Thomas.
Fren Downey presided over the
meeting in the absence of President
Ellen Dickson.
